Friends are a big part of the JM&Sons lifestyle, so when we learned our pal Jessi Cruickshank was unhappy with her Wikipedia photo, Mackenzie packed his camera and hopped the next flight to California.
Then the pair of them spent the afternoon goofing around, so she's still stuck with it.
Jessi's been living in L.A. for a while now, hosting for eTalk and shooting a television series to be released later this year. But despite being transplanted to Tinseltown, she's sticking to her northern identity like maple syrup to a beaver. “Oh absolutely. I celebrate Canada Day more vigorously than ever before,” she assures us. “I go to every Canucks game in L.A or Anaheim and 95% of my friends here are Canadian.”
She was actually born in an A&W restaurant in Calgary (“That is a fact. A classy, classy fact.”), but grew up in Vancouver. School took her to the U.K., then work brought her to Toronto before she made the leap to La La Land. “It's racist really, but I can’t help it! I feel a connection with Canadians here. We're all warm and supportive of each other and we’re not on juice cleanses.”
That's for sure. Instead she supplements her intake with a stash of uniquely Canadian cuisine, like Coffee Crisp, ketchup chips and Canadian Twizzlers. “When it gets depleted, I call my mother immediately for a shipment.”
As for those other Canadians she speaks of, “a stereotype exists here that we all know each other, and… its totally true! Growing up in Vancouver I went to high school with Seth Rogen, I was on a comedy troupe with Nathan Fielder, I played soccer with Cobie Smulders… we are all connected in some adorable Canadian way.”
That might help to explain why the host of Canada's Smartest Person has picked up only a trace of the California lilt. “I wish I had the balls of Madonna, to just show up one day with a British accent... sadly, I do not. But the producers on my first show here in L.A forced me to learn to say ‘abaaawt’ instead of ‘abouuut,’ and that one seems to have stuck.”
As JM&Sons' Ambassador to The City of Angels and proud new owner of a pour-over coffee stand (lovingly built by hand), Jessi proudly proclaims her affection for roasted caffeine. “Its obnoxious. I spend way too much money on beans and way too much time making my morning cup, but its worth every sip. I cannot wait to start a love affair with my new JM&Sons Pour-Over Coffee Stand!”
